Easter Cake

This was a fun cake to make. I made all the decorations you see on it. Everything is made of marshmallow fondant on the outside.

Easter Fun!

I hope you all had a great Easter. We sure did. Easter morning was the typical Easter basket fun with the kids. Our Easter bunny hides the baskets and the kids have to hunt for them when they get up.

We had Brett's family and Jenny's mom here with us for Easter dinner and an egg hunt. We had a great time with everyone.

Zoo Day

Yesterday I took the kids to the San Diego Zoo. We had a lot of fun and by the end our feet and legs were DEAD.

We saw some fun and interesting things. For example, the picture below is an anteater carrying it's baby on it's back. At first when we came up to this enclosure I thought it was two anteaters in love, but on closer inspection it was a little baby riding around on it's mother. It was cute to see it just ride around and around on the mom. You'll have to click on the picture to see the detail better.

When we went to see the polar bears there weren't any in there to see. We decided to sit down and eat our lunch there. As we started to eat I noticed a zoo worker come into the enclosure with a black plastic bag. I thought, well that explains why there aren't bears inside. Then I realized what she was doing. She pulled a big, huge meaty bone out of the bag and sat it up on top of a tall log. We got there just in time for snack time. We had a front row seat to watch this big polar bear come into the enclosure and find his snack. You could see that he knew immediately it was there. His nose was in the air sniffing around. It didn't take him long at all to find his way to the bone, stand on his hind legs and take it away to the back of the pen to enjoy his feast.

SURPRISE!! It's another cake.

I hope you all aren't getting sick of looking at my cakes. I'm not sick of making them. This one is an Italian Cream Cake. It's filled with a coconut Swiss meringue buttercream. The icing under the fondant is the same.

The fondant is fun to work with. It's similar to working with play dough. It's very pliable and smooth.

Maggie Moo's

Today Hannah and I went on a playgroup field trip to Maggie Moo's ice cream parlor. They took the kids to the back where they make the ice cream and showed them how it all works. They then got to have a little sample of ice cream right out of the ice cream machine. After the tour of the back of the store all the kids came back to the front and got to choose a flavor of ice cream and a mix-in. The store worker would take one child at a time behind the counter, put a little apron on them, and let them do their own mix-in. (It's the same concept as Cold Stone.) Hannah chose strawberry ice cream, not because she particularly likes the flavor but because it was pink. Her mix-in of choice was gummy bears. I didn't even try to convince her to choose chocolate with Snicker's mix-in. It wouldn't have been a pretty sight to have her crying that her mommy ate all her ice cream.

It's time to put our listening ears on.

Hannah worked side by side with her buddy, Ellis.

DELICIOUS!

Maggie came to visit us after we finished making our ice cream.

Ethan's Awards

Today Ethan received the Student of the Month award at his school. Of course each class has 2 kids per month, but still, an honor. As we were there to watch him be recognized he was called up and took his place. Then they proceeded on with the other awards going his classmates. They announced the Excellence in Mathematics award for excelling in addition with three digit numbers. They called out Ethan's name again so he went over and collected his second pat on the back. Way to go Ethan!

Red Velvet

It seems that my blog is become just a cake documentation. So be it, for now. I guess I have nothing exciting in my life to share right now.

This cake is a red velvet cake with a white chocolate cream cheese icing.

You've Got to See This Cake!

We are having a family party to celebrate Brett, Jenny, and Grant's birthdays. I, of course, volunteered to make the cake. Brett turned 40 last Sunday so he is now officially over the hill. I decided to represent that fact in cake form. Jenny is partially up the hill and Grant is still at the bottom of the hill.

This was my first attempt using fondant. I made the fondant myself. The people are made of fondant and the base cake is covered with fondant as well.
